When describing people, there is a tendency to focus on gender, age, and race as well. Any person, including consumers or their family members, friends, or aged care staff, can make a complaint about an Australian Government funded aged care provider to the Commission. This is reflected in the Aged Care Quality Standards: Aged Care Quality Standard 1 - Consumer Dignity and Choice and Aged Care Quality Standard 2 - Ongoing Assessment and Planning with Consumers. Older workers over 45 are employed well, but if they become unemployed or laid off, they have a much harder time finding new work than younger workers. Meanwhile, the highest rate of reported discrimination by religious organisations was from LGBTIQ people aged 65 and over – which is possibly explained by recent interactions with religious-operated aged care services.

At the Commonwealth level, policy and regulatory policy is split between three departments and one agency – the Department of Social Security and the NDIA for disability, Veterans Affairs for disability and aged care support to veterans and the Department of Health and Ageing for aged care. Some groups within the community reported even higher rates than these already high averages, with intersex and trans people, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ people and people aged 25 to 44 particularly affected. The lowest lifetime rates of discrimination in health, community services or aged care were in Tasmania, while the highest (but only just) were in the ACT. If a doctor does not seem aware of how a medication may impact an older person or seems to be not working aggressively enough to find a cure for you or a loved one – speak up and/or find a second opinion or do some research on your own. There is an inherent vulnerability in seeking healthcare and accessing aged care. Far from recognising the rights of the aged, the Australian Parliament decided that they deserved lesser rights than younger Australians. Fortunatly, with the large number of boomers dealing with these types of issues, there are also advocacy groups gaining strength like AARP and information sources to help those pursuing mid-life or older career changes. Age Discrimination in Health Care. This particularly offensive, and explicit act by government, reduced rights that would otherwise exist for older people. One possible explanation is greater involvement, and therefore potential exposure to discrimination in, family-related health and community services.
