Dudley As a young person arriving from the Midwest and new to Oregon I discovered the Metolius River on a gray April day some fifty years ago. The Metolius is broken into a couple different sections; 12 miles of the river above Bridge 99 is fly fishing only, while the lower section is open for more than just fly fishing - either way this entire stretch is one of the most scenic places to fish in Central Oregon. I will never forget standing alone on the Metolius River bridge at Camp Sherman and watching the clear dark river sweep abound a bend, break into several white water riffles and pass under the bridge. Friends contracted with Geosyntec Associates in Portland last year to analyze and report on water quality data gathered over the last two decades by groups including: Analysis of data was across multiple sites along the length of the river, over two decades, and looked at a variety of water quality factors including levels of E. coli, nitrates, phosphorous, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. On July 15, 2009, on the bridge over the Metolius River at Wizard Falls, Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed the Metolius Preservation Act. No critical trends were discovered, although levels of phosphorous and nitrates did occasionally rise above regional standard levels – likely attributable to local geology. Beyond Lower Bridge the Metolius is a designated Wild and Scenic river in a deep rugged forested canyon. It is a valued unique environmental resource. Flowing north along Green Ridge thenturning east around the Horn of the Metolius, the river ends in the waters of the Lake Billy Chinook. It establishes a boundary to the Metolius watershed that protects the ground water, springs and tributaries as a special preserve protected forever. In 1988 the Save the Metolius organization sought designation of the Metolius Basin as a National Conservation Area. In the shadows under the bridge were large rainbow trout holding head up stream in the shallow water, drifting from side to side moving with the current. The water is clear. The large red barked old growth ponderosas mixed with tall slender tamaracks and the dense green firs create a forest canopy of unusual beauty along the Metolius.
