The Word gives us new birth and convicts (James 1:18). Anything else in the way of power from the Word of God, unless first the Word of God had the power to convict of sin, would not mean anything at all, would it? I grew up and spent my adult years drinking good Southern style sweet tea. ", You might say, "Well, you just said that the faith that overcomes the world is based on the Word and that verse you read doesn't prove that." How could you read that and not be happy? That's an argument that any debater would take and just prove it over and over and over with that one verse, wouldn't he? "Where's my sword?" They say: "There's a little divine spark down in every man that just needs to be fanned a little bit, you know, and get it started and then it glows up, and then he becomes a Christian.". That's not the way you get faith, is it? The place yourself under the reproving word of God. One cannot hear or read the Word of God without being affected! With such a “living” and “powerful” word at our disposal, we would be foolish to neglect the blessings it offers, or the warnings it gives! Oh, I know that the body itself has still got some sinful tendencies in it that we don't get rid of until the resurrection or until the Rapture. There's no doubt that it is God who has established the ministry of teaching and preaching in the church. There is no other food that so strengthens for service as this book right here. The last thought I want to bring to your mind is this, and this is one that's badly needed today. Teaching people, "Only believe," is not enough. It would be impossible to find anything more self-righteous than a self-righteous Jew in New Testament days. As the living word it continues through each age with compelling relevance. "You didn't say I had to open it." --- "The word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house." But now looking at it from the other viewpoint, to win others to Christ from our side, from the human side, the process is simple. And that's God, of course, speaking there. They can even make it thrilling if they're a good enough orator --- not only interesting but thrilling. The Word concerning Christ, the Word concerning Christ crucified and risen, when it's in the heart, quickened by the Spirit and believed with the whole heart, brings forth the new birth in Christ. It says: "Of his own will begat he us," --- what are we talking about? "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.". Spirit is the idea of the eternal. But Acts chapter 16, switching over now to a positive approach, we find that faith is a product of a certain cause. They are just running wild with all kinds of weird, ridiculous ideas. The Word of God also provides the power for protection from sin! And this one makes it very plain as well. The Word has power to produce faith --- Did you know that? And it fits in very well with our message tonight: Peter speaks of this in Second Peter 1:4. The thing that's got to happen is he's got to have a new birth to become a Christian. Psalm 62:11 has this to say: "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God." Let us think for a few minutes about the power of God's Word or the power of the Word of God. Not only in this passage, but elsewhere we read of the abiding nature of God’s Word, 1) Notice Peter’s description of it _ 1 Peter 1:23-25. b. I'm a child of the King! Ps 107:19-20 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He used the Word of God. The Bible does not equip us for every good deed by telling us the specific choice to make for every new situation. And that is power for fruit bearing. Unless we are fed daily on the Word, we become weak, piddling Christians! It feels like my lungs are burning up." "Whatsoever things were written aforetime," that includes all of it that was written before Romans --- Everything that had been written, certainly all of the Old Testament had been written. And that cause is the Word of God. He's talking about all the Scriptures that have been written before this time, isn't He? They try for a couple of days or weeks, don't see fruit, so they give up, "It doesn't work.". There is no other way to produce this new life, except this process we are talking about now. This sermon gives three word pictures of the Authority of God’s Word. But the key to using that mirror is putting God's Word into practice. God's Word has the power to bring to regeneration. But the Word has the power to protect from error and from sin. Jesus has been giving them some more of the Living Word of God directly into their ears from His own mouth. A revival resulted, just as it did when Ezra read and preached the word with Nehemiah. Here is a succinct summary of all that has been said in Hebrews 3:7 – Hebrews 4:10, 2. But what is the end result? But unless you have that seed to begin with, you don't get any fruit, just nothing! 10With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. That is the foundation of faith, the Word, and what brings us to faith! It is a Powerful Word (v 12b) - The word translated “powerful” is the word from which we get energy and energetic. Not just a weak, little, old niggling joy once in awhile when the preacher hits a high note on Sunday morning. Oh, they can spin you some good stories that sound good, these false teachers can. .It is written!” (Matthew 4:1-11). Romans 14:23 “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” And Romans 7:4 “Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ…that we should bring forth fruit unto God.” Bearing fruit in “every good work” means that it comes out on the branches of your life naturally from something that has changed inside. It says: "That he," and, of course, if you read the context there, you understand that it's talking about God the Father, "That he," God the Father, "would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might." “ For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword , piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) God’s Word is powerful to expose our sin (4:12). And all of these things come through the power of the Word of God: patience, comfort and hope! And it fits in very well with our message tonight: We have already in our introduction mentioned several things. The Bible was the main literature in school. The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow. The Word has the power also to produce patience, comfort, and hope --- All of these things. It has the power to produce faith. Jeremiah 23:29 speaks of this. --- When they were really convicted by the power of the Word! 2. It means to say that God’s word has God’s power, his energy. You've heard me quote this verse several times before. Gal 6:9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. He taught them a couple of hymns, gave them a Bible in Japanese, and encouraged them to live by it. This is the place we need to look for it. Do you want peace and joy in your life? Now, let's go back to Ephesians 3:16, and see what that has for us. Today, they say it to hundreds of thousands of people --- things just like that. Fear not, I am with thee, oh be not dismayed. 2. The only thing on which saving faith can rest, does rest or needs to rest is this Word right here. Transcript The Word of God - Quick, Powerful and Sharp. "And they spake unto him," what? You say, "Well, isn't that wonderful?" By what? But when you get them really convicted by the power of the Word of God, they're going to want to find out what to do to be saved. 1) God is eternal, He is “the living God”, 2) He cannot lie, so what He says will come to pass, 2. You may say, "Well, what about this? Much of the time they don't even go to church. We're not talking about that part right now. The villagers patterned their lives on Jesus, took the Ten Commandments as their legal code, and the Sermon on the Mount became their guide to social conduct. For I am thy God and will still give thee aid. The instructions are on the bottle. It says: "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God," doesn't it? Notice that these were self-righteous men, too. They can deceive you with their oratory, their fine words and their human reasoning, but when you put it up beside the Word, it just doesn't hold water, does it? It makes some changes. Another step further, we see God's Word has the power to produce joy. So He rejected or refused Satan's temptations every time by a Scripture quotation! That will produce joy! Oh, Yes! He doesn't go home drunk and beat up his family like he did before, does he? We know the secret, don't we? But that won't save them either! Now what if you didn't have any seed? The Word of God carried home by the Spirit of God always brings conviction. And that is power for fruit bearing. We can get up and talk about mother's prayers and wanting to meet mama on the other side. That doesn't have anything to do with whether he's really a Christian or not, does it? The gospel in particular has the power to save, c. Through God’s word we can be born again, d. It works effectively in those who believe, 2) Notice the opposite effect _ Hebrews 4:2, e. It can build us up, and give us the inheritance that is ours _ Acts 20:32, f. It can make the man of God complete for all good works _ 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
