This paper discusses issues surrounding the use of Australian Aboriginal English in the classroom in the light of a recent survey. AE is not ‘bad English’, ‘lazy English’ or ‘uneducated English’ to be corrected and eliminated. Registered in England & Wales No. I take the position that this recognition in schools depends to a significant degree on universities training their preservice teachers to recognise Aboriginal English as necessary to Aboriginal student learning and therefore as a legitimate dialect of the classroom, and this in turn requires universities to recognise the importance of Aboriginal English in their own curricula. The suggestion is that such changes might make classrooms places that work for the Aboriginal students educationally, culturally and socially, and assist them to become confident and capable users of Standard Australian English.
