Daguerreotype, first successful form of photography, named for Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre of France, who invented the technique in collaboration with Nicéphore Niépce in the 1830s. The sensitization involves halogen fumes, to which the silver surface is exposed in darkness or under safelight: first to iodine fumes, that produce a coating of silver iodide, and then to bromine fumes, resulting in silver halide coating.
