So top lid of Kestrel 38 isn't removable and its vertical position can't be customized. Mesh water bottle holders at each side are very wide and deep. The deep side pockets are good too for water but also for a tripod - I use the Manfrotto BeFree - it fits easy! Kestrel 48 is for those who have no problems checking their pack while travelling and planning to use the pack during a fair amount of multiday outdoor activities.
